HELP ME...
RAISE FUNDS FOR NDCS

The Challenge

In February 2010 I will be helping to raise funds for the National Deaf Children's Society by taking part in a dog sledding expedition in the Arctic Circle. The challenge is to lead a team of four Huskies more than 250km across the ice and lakes of Northern Norway. With temperatures likely to fall as low as -30C and in a hostile environment, this will prove to be an arduous physical challenge.

A maximum of 13 people, none of whom I will have met beforehand will be on the expedition. We will be accompanied by an Expedition Leader, a Doctor and a local guide. We will be expected to learn to handle, harness and lead our own team of dogs. This will include using an ice break and snow anchor.Specialist clothing will be provided for us.

Starting out from Alta in the far north of Norway the Expedition will commence through forests and then over undulating terrain, eventually mountainous and above the tree line. Where it is not possible for the dogs to pull the sleds, we will have to walk with them, pulling the sleds ourselves. We will also be crossing the frozen lakes of Jiesavri and Jotka. Jiesavri is the largest lake in the Finmark area and is in total wilderness and isolation. Accommodation will be in log cabins with basic food for meals. I am told that it is essential to be physically fit for the rigours of the trip as well as the extreme cold, and therefore I will be doing the relevant training beforehand.

It would be great if you could sponsor me on this challenge. By doing so, much needed funds will go towards providing equipment for deaf children.

Thank you
